Cherish the once-in-a-lifetime encounter. Accept the present and believe that it will lead to the future.

Shun, a high-end club that has gained popularity among many Japanese people thanks to its heartwarming Japanese-style hospitality, will celebrate its second anniversary in April 2024. In this article, we spoke with Shuko Ohara, a mother of members of Shun, about the club’s two-year journey and its future prospects.

Looking back on these two years, all I can think of is the word “thankful.” It was my first time traveling abroad to Vietnam at the age of 57. In this unfamiliar place, I came into contact with the kindness of people for the first time. The people I met in Ho Chi Minh City reminded me of the warmth I felt in Okinawa, the birthplace of “Shun,” and the sense of familiarity I had there. Perhaps I was actually receiving genuine hospitality.
When I started working in Ho Chi Minh City, I first had respect for the country of Vietnam. I returned to my original mindset and once again became acutely aware of my feelings for people. Especially the Vietnamese people value their parents and families more than anyone else. Japan has become a little less important
I feel like I'm being followed.
After 30 years of working in this industry and interacting with so many people, the most memorable thing I have received is the phrase: “As long as you have time, meet as many people as you can without hesitation. That will become your wealth.” In the past two years, I have put this into practice and it has truly become my wealth. I have kept this in my heart because I have experienced it firsthand. I also tell my staff to always keep these three things in mind. Shun welcomes customers with the motto of “gratitude,” “humility,” and “dignity.” Even if words don’t come out well, you can’t touch the heart; but you can touch the compassion and kindness that people have for each other. Shun is just a point in life. That’s why I have asked my staff to understand these three things and work with pride as a Japanese-style luxury club.
Our ultimate goal for the future is to ensure that this space in Shun is understood by the Vietnamese people as the kind of space they need for social gatherings. And we are delighted that the Vietnamese staff who are able to provide Japanese-style hospitality here today will be confident and proud and continue to build this luxury club Shun in Vietnam in the future.

Introduction to the Vietnamese staff
Over these two years, I have learned a lot about Japanese manners and hospitality that are unique to the Japanese people. I am motivated to communicate more with my customers, and I have also taken up studying Japanese to help achieve my N2 certification. I hope to continue challenging myself and growing with the club Shun in the future!
