Sudden hearing loss is a condition in which the inner ear malfunctions suddenly, causing hearing to deteriorate despite there being no abnormalities in the eardrum or ear bones. Many people tend to ignore it as if it was just a case of "just getting tired," but this is a battle with time.
Symptoms range from a complete loss of hearing in one ear to severe symptoms that make it impossible to move or speak. Tests include a medical history, hearing tests, and an ear endoscopy to check the eardrum. In severe cases, steroid medication is the mainstay of treatment. The exact cause is not fully understood, but it has been linked to fatigue and stress, making it not just a problem for those living in Hanoi but also for those who are new to life in a foreign country.
Also, the commonality among them is that early treatment is crucial for "acoustic hearing loss" caused by loud live music or prolonged use of earphones. The hearing does not recover quickly enough to start treatment, and the recovery rate drops significantly after 1 to 2 weeks of onset. Therefore, early consultation is extremely important. When you feel that you are "a little hard of hearing," please consult an ear, nose, and throat specialist.
