To protect your child's hearing—Early detection of suppurative otitis media—

Subacute otitis media is a condition in which fluid accumulates in the middle ear deep within the eardrum after acute otitis media or as a result of blowing your nose. There is little pain, but as the fluid accumulates, the movement of the eardrum becomes impaired, leading to symptoms such as hearing loss and a feeling of blockage in the ear.
This disease is often seen in children whose ear tubes, which connect the middle ear and the upper pharynx and are responsible for ventilation, are underdeveloped. However, because children are highly adaptable, they may not notice any hearing impairment, so caution is required.
If suppurative otitis media is suspected, the eardrum is examined using an otoscope or an endoscope, and tests such as hearing tests and examinations to check the eardrum’s movement (tympanometry) are performed.
Treatment involves taking expectorants to help remove the accumulated exudate, as well as performing surgery to open part of the eardrum or to place a ventilation tube if there is no improvement in symptoms for an extended period of time or if severe hearing loss is present.
Your child's hearing is also related to their development and learning. If you notice any concerns, please consult a specialist as soon as possible.
