December 2024 issue Hello everyone, did you know that Vietnam also has its own youth slang?

English slang is quite famous, isn’t it? In Japan, during the tapioca craze a little while ago, it was called “tapir” to drink tapioca, and it became popular among young people. Today, we’ll introduce some of the youth slang that’s popular in Vietnam!

Vietnamese youth language

Out of words カンロイ

It represents a state where words cannot be produced due to strong emotions such as surprise or emotion. In Japanese, it means "unable to speak", "dumbfounded".
Example: This guy claims he's the best in his class, but his test scores are even lower than mine. Crap!!!
This person said that they were the smartest in the class, but their test scores were lower than mine. I can't say anything!!!

Trẻ trâu チェーチョウ

It refers to someone who is high-spirited and playful. This also applies to people who are funny. Since it is a derogatory term, avoid using it in formal settings.
Example: My son is very young; he spends all day playing video games without worrying about his studies.
My son is really childish; he just plays video games all day and doesn't study at all.

Thả thính ターティン

Thả thính, literally translated, means "spreading bait," but in modern Vietnamese it refers to "picking up" or "approaching" someone.
Example: He's flirting with you.
He's flirting with her.

Gato Gato

When I see that someone else has something I don’t have, I get jealous and envious. I often use this word to convey that feeling to the other person.
Example: I'm so jealous of her looks!
I envy her beauty!
