When you hear the term "socially successful person," what kind of person comes to mind? Depending on their values, this can vary from physical to cultural to spiritual. On the other hand, nowadays, there were three ideal images of a successful man that were often mentioned in Vietnam in the past. In this article, we will introduce those three words.
Home: Living in a Western-style house
By "Western" here, I mean France. From the colonial era to the present, the Western-style buildings seen in Vietnam were all large and had designs that were more or less considered modern. If you were to build a house for yourself like this, it would be beyond your financial means. This suggests that it is a term intended to evoke financial success.

Food: Eating Chinese food
It is often said that “food is Chinese,” but it seems that this perception exists in Vietnam as well. Vietnamese cuisine, which is geographically close and has been influenced by Chinese cuisine historically, is more of a luxury item than something that is eaten on a daily basis. Because it requires elaborate ingredients and cooking methods, Chinese cuisine is more of a special occasion or a treat to be enjoyed in a more expensive restaurant. This sense of the unusual is one of the reasons why it has been passed down as an image of success.
Wife: A Japanese woman as a wife

The Japanese wife is said to be a serious person and to be known for taking good care of the family. There are other aspects to it, such as the influence of the Japanese drama “Osin.” Some people say that this also applies to Vietnamese women. However, according to one Vietnamese person, “Vietnamese women become stronger when they get married.” This image is not common among Japanese women, so it seems that they are idealizing a type of “daimyojin” (Japanese female feudal lord). Also, Vietnamese women tend not to want to be a full-time housewife even if they have money, and there are voices that it is difficult to expect them to be constantly at home.
On the one hand, some Japanese women want to have a Vietnamese woman as a wife, but on the other hand, I often feel that Vietnamese men like Vietnamese women. I have heard Vietnamese men praise the qualities of Vietnamese women, saying things like, "Vietnamese wives are great." This is probably because cultural values are the best match for them. Of course, it goes without saying that the qualities of women in each country are different, but in any case, it is nice to be able to say that the women in your own country are good.
