Temple Changok on the lake where history still lives

Chang Ok Temple is known as the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi, located on the banks of Lake Tay. Its distinctive feature is the beautiful scenery of the red Buddha statue reflected in the lake, and it has been a place that has supported people's faith throughout its long history in a quiet environment surrounded by the lake.

The temple floating on the lake stands out especially in its silence.

The construction of Chanok Temple dates back to the mid-sixth century, and it is said to have been built by Ly Nam De, known as the first emperor of Vietnam. Initially located along the Hong River, it was subsequently relocated to the small island of the present-day Thai Lake in the 17th century due to repeated flooding and erosion. The first thing that catches the eye inside the temple is the 11-story pagoda "Lien Hoa Lau", which was rebuilt in 2004. It is an octagonal pagoda about 15 meters high, symbolizing the stages of enlightenment in Buddhism. The lower levels represent the early stages of practice, while the upper levels symbolize that one is approaching enlightenment as one progresses. Each level houses a statue of a Buddha, positioned as a presence that spiritually supports and guides the practitioner towards ultimate enlightenment.
Furthermore, within the temple grounds, a Bodhi tree donated from Sri Lanka has been planted. This is the same type of sacred tree that Shakyamuni is said to have attained enlightenment under, and many worshippers offer their hands in prayer.
