In your daily life in Hanoi, many of you may have noticed the changing colors of the sky and the quality of the air. Perhaps you feel a little tired when you go outside, or you have days when you just don’t feel like being happy for no particular reason. These small differences can unknowingly affect your mind. Parenting in such an environment can use up more energy than you might think. The unfamiliar environment, the differences in language and culture, and the worry of not having someone to turn to—all of these factors add up to a daily burden that can eventually take a toll on your mind and body.
Even on days when I feel a little tired or less able to relax than before, it’s not a strange thing. It’s not because I’m not trying hard; it’s just that living and raising a child in a foreign country requires a lot of energy every day.
Every day of parenting continues. That’s why what’s important is to take time to relax and incorporate mood changes effectively. Just taking a little bit of fresh air, sipping your favorite drink slowly, or having a casual conversation with someone can all help to gently calm your mind.
And it’s also very important not to isolate yourself. When you express your worries or little doubts in words, you may feel like you’re not alone. Talking to someone or seeking advice is an important support for continuing to care for your child. There’s no right way to parent, and everyone has their own pace.
For about 20 years in Japan, I have worked as a midwife, interacting with many mothers and babies, as well as their families. I have also raised three children myself. I have experienced being confused and stuck in parenting situations that don’t follow a logical pattern.
Parenting in Hanoi can sometimes feel more difficult than you might imagine. If you ever find yourself wondering, “Is this normal?” or “I wish I could ask someone,” please feel free to reach out. We would be happy to help any mom or family in Hanoi who needs a little more peace of mind in their daily lives.
